Syrian Undercover Surprise

Syria continues to be a place ravaged by extremism, but it was once a place that thrived with commerce and even Christian influence. Though ISIS has destroyed many archaeological sites around the country, I wanted such a dig site as a back-drop for the last installment of the Danny Vance Adventures.

Dan Vance Adventure #6

D.I. Telbat

Tears filled Rachel Powell's eyes as she looked up at the crumbling Syrian Citadel on an Aleppo hilltop. Though nothing was terribly wrong in her life, she still felt like things were crumbling around her, just like the old fortress ramparts.

Wiping at her eyes, Rachel smiled at a young couple of tourists. Maybe they were honeymooners up from Damascus, visiting the Old City. In a perfect world, that would've been Rachel with Danny Vance, her boyfriend of several years. Before he'd left for college, she thought he might even propose. But she was the last thing on his mind, apparently.

Even a football career in Oregon hadn't been enough for Danny. After a month of college, he had emailed to tell her that he had joined the Commission of International Laborers. God had called him. No other explanation.

"Papers," a plain clothed policeman said to Rachel. He had spoken to her in English, so Rachel knew she stood out as a Westerner, even with her black head covering. "American?"

She handed him her fabricated passport without a flinch. Like Danny, she had joined COIL, and the relief organization had sent her to Saudi Arabia and then Colombia for initial training. Getting past the Mukhabarat, Syria's secret police, seemed like a practiced exercise now.

"No, Canadian." She gestured at a pair of tents a short walk across the rocky sand next to the old fortress. "I'm Jani Ward, an archaeologist from University."

"In the future, you should not travel alone. This is Syria, not Canada."

The policeman returned her papers and walked away. Rachel should have felt frightened or anxious in the country of conflict, but she felt only numbness. Without any word from Danny in weeks, she had resigned herself to a life without him. She accepted the dangers of living in potentially violent lands, even Syria, to make contact with the Christian underground network of believers.

Next month, she could be sent to Malaysia, North Korea, or even Iran. A life of secrecy and loneliness wasn't what she had planned, but Rachel had been trained well by COIL agents, and she was now satisfied that she was making a difference for Christ. Her wealthy parents had been supportive, but she was still alone.

Shaking off her feelings of abandonment, she started walking toward the excavation site. For the last two weeks, she'd been studying Syrian history to accurately assume her identity. Her assignment was easier said than done, though—to discern the needs of Christians in the country. Even though the country's dictator had encouraged religious tolerance, over 90 percent of the people were Muslim. The Christians lived quietly and oftentimes secluded as outcasts in their neighborhoods. That was, the Christians ISIS hadn't killed.
